Listening before recording
A useful field recording often starts with a pause. Pick a quiet spot, listen for a minute, then turn on the microphone. A distant train or a short gust of wind can give the scene its character.

What I keep in the bag
A small recorder, spare batteries, a notebook, and enough free time to take a different way home.
